Moto 360 Smart Watch Detailed Review
A Stylish Round Smart Watch Powered by Android Wear
Motorola’s latest wearable device, the Moto 360, went on sale today at noon.
And we couldn’t be more excited.
Designed to be as much a fashion statement as a functional smart watch, the 360 offers a truly unique round-faced design that should help it sail onto the arms of people who have so far shied away from the, let’s say, ‘geeky’ designs currently being shipped from current market leaders Pebble, Samsung and Sony.
It just looks a lot more like a watch.
Which is to say, it looks acceptably good. And that’s something that has been missing from the smart watch market, save perhaps for the Pebble Steel.
Based on Google’s Android Wear operating system, the Moto 360 provides class-leading smart watch functionality including intelligent notifications, rich smartphone integration, voice commands, real time alerts and contextually-aware apps including Google Now.
The Moto 360 tethers with any Android 4.3 compatible smartphone. It is also waterproof and will not require USB cable for charging. The lens is made of Gorilla Glass 3, so it won’t be easy to scratch.
Because the Moto 360 is based on Android Wear, it comes with extensive message notifications, intelligent alerts, on-watch navigation and voice-activated commands using Google Now right out of the box.
Motorola’s choice of Android Wear will eventually result in lots of apps being made available for the new device. But for now, app selection is a bit limited. The full selection can be seen on Google’s Play store for Android Wear apps.
That said, you can get a good feel for the apps potential of the new device by watching this video produced by Macmixing. It’s an 8-minute video walkthrough of the new Android Wear SDK operating using a round Moto 360 overlay. It gives you a good overview of the basic features of Android Wear.
The Moto360 features a unique round face design with a metal casing. It has straps available in stainless metal and black metal (for $50 more, later this year) and black leather (right now).
The round face makes the 360 a unique and especially stylish choice. It contrasts with the square, masculine designs of all other leading smart watches including the Pebble Steel, Samsung Gear and Sony Smart Watch. These also happen to be the best-selling smart watches to-date, but we think the round design is the bomb.
In fact, that round face may be a stroke of genius on Motorola’s part.
